What is Silentium Wrestling?

Silentium Wrestling was formed in order to provide a new way of practising internal and external skills in a combative or martial tradition. Silentium Wrestling practice contains the two elements of sitting in the silence- Silentium, and a unique style of wrestling emphasising circular, angled and flanking methods.  Silentium Wrestling is a combined practice that assists in strengthening and unifying your consciousness and energy to single purpose focus and practice. All techniques are initially taught and practised slowly and carefully with full co-operation between wrestlers. Beginner students are partnered with more experienced practitioners during class times. All skill levels are catered for, from beginners to experienced wrestlers. You will be able to learn in a safe, friendly and supportive environment and progress at your own pace.

Silentium Wrestling was developed by Geoff Sweeting (pictured top right in photo above). Geoff has been helping people strengthen and transform their lives through the martial and meditative arts for over twenty years. He is a qualified and experienced Hypnotherapist and also holds teaching qualifications in Traditional Martial Arts. In addition to his qualifications as a Senior Clinical Hypnotherapist Geoff is also a qualified and accredited Acupuncturist and Herbalist with qualifications from Australia and China. Geoff has studied with Christian monks, Zen and Taoist masters in prayer and meditation techniques and has been training in the martial arts of Baguazhang and Xingyiquan since the early 1990's.  Geoff was accepted as an "inner door" disciple of Master Wang Tong in Beijing, China, a disciple of Li Zi Ming and Sun Feng Lin. This recognition gave Geoff the opportunity to become an official fifth generation Baguazhang and seventh generation Xingyiquan inheritor to these traditional systems. Geoff currently trains in Wrestling, Judo and BJJ with Professor Jason 'Coach' Miller in Brisbane, Australia.

WRESTLING

The WRESTLING element of Silentium Wrestling has evolved primarily from elements of Folk, Chinese and Freestyle wrestling, alongside core principles from the art of Baguazhang. The wrestling of Silentium Wrestling is an exciting, unique circular style that offers something new and innovative to both beginner and advanced practitioner alike.

Silentium Wrestling is also unique in that the intensity level of the wrestling is guided by both the instructors present at the training session and the agreement of both wrestlers. All techniques are taught and practised slowly and carefully with full co-operation between wrestlers.  Beginner students are partnered with more experienced practitioners during class times.  All skill levels are catered for, from beginners to experienced wrestlers. You will be able to learn in a safe, friendly and supportive environment and progress at your own pace.

SILENT MEDITATIVE PRAYER

The pace of life and its endless demands often leave us tired and weary. Our consciousness and energy are continually being pulled in countless directions over the course of our daily existence. Stillness and quiet, contemplative and prayerful silence are often placed last in our list of priorities or not at all. Yet silence is the very voice of God.

SILENTIUM is a Latin word that means both silence and stillness. Sitting still in prayerful silence provides the space to clear away the demands and competing voices in the world. It is where we can take time and put aside time, just to be in the presence of God. SILENTIUM sitting is a calm, silent prayer in which we turn our heart, mind and body to God in an act of love. In our practice, SILENTIUM is stillness of doing, and silence of being.  Intentional silence and stillness is healing and centring. Bring the peace of inner stillness into your way of living through practising silence of your whole being.

"In the inner stillness where meditation leads,

the Spirit secretly anoints the soul and heals our deepest wounds."

St John of the Cross

What to expect at a Silentium Wrestling class

Though the classes may vary according to the experience level of participants and the focus of learning and training under the instructor at the time, a typical Silentium Wrestling class contains sitting in the silence, stretches and warm ups, wrestling drills, wrestling methods, techniques and applications.  Instructors and practitioners are friendly and supportive and welcoming to all new students.
